Summary

Eastgate built a centralized traffic data analytics platform for a German smart mobility client, enabling real-time monitoring and AI-assisted incident management across the urban road network. The platform processes historical and live traffic data through a microservices architecture on Kubernetes, delivering sub-200ms latency for operator dashboards and public information systems. Delivered as a dedicated engagement from 2019 to 2023.

The Challenge

01

No centralized platform to monitor real-time and historical traffic data across the urban road network

02

Traffic incident management relied on manual assessment without real-time data feeds or automated alerting

03

Required integration with existing city infrastructure and scalable deployment for city-wide coverage

04

Limited ability to deliver timely, data-driven recommendations to traffic operators and the public

The Solution

01 Traffic data analytics platform

A single platform analyses both real-time and historical traffic data across the urban road network, replacing the situation where operators had neither view centrally available.

02 AI-assisted incident tooling

UI tooling assists operators with traffic incident monitoring and control centre work, so assessment is supported by live data rather than done manually from scratch.

03 Microservices with Spring

Spring Boot and Spring Cloud carry a microservices architecture that isolates services, which is what lets the platform scale to city-wide coverage without redeploying it as a unit.

04 Real-time event streaming

Kafka ingests and moves traffic data continuously, keeping the analytics fed as conditions change rather than in batches.

05 Kubernetes deployment

Docker and Kubernetes give auto-scaling and 24/7 high availability, which is the operating requirement for a control centre and for the public information systems it feeds.

06 Monitoring and observability

An ELK Stack pipeline provides monitoring and observability, so the team can see platform behaviour at the sub-200ms latency the dashboards are held to.
