Pony.ai Races to 3,000 Robotaxis by 2026

Summarize this post by:

Chinese autonomous driving company Pony.ai plans to triple its global robotaxi fleet by the end of 2026, marking one of the industry’s most aggressive expansion timelines as commercial self-driving operations continue to scale.

The company currently operates 961 robotaxis and expects to reach 1,000 vehicles by the end of 2025. According to its Q3 earnings report, Pony.ai aims to surpass 3,000 commercial robotaxis by late 2026. It’s supported by rapid deployment across major Chinese cities and new international markets.

Pony.ai, listed on both Nasdaq and the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, has accelerated commercial operations throughout 2025. The company now charges for robotaxi rides in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen, making it one of the few autonomous driving firms with multi-city paid deployments in China.

In parallel, the company is expanding overseas through partnerships with governments and mobility platforms. Pony.ai plans to enter eight global markets, including Qatar, Singapore, and collaborations with Bolt and Uber, reflecting growing interest in autonomous mobility across emerging and developed markets.

The operational ramp-up has sharply increased revenue - but also widened losses:

  • Q3 revenue: $25.4M (up 72% YoY)
  • Robotaxi revenue: $6.7M
  • Robotruck revenue: $10.2M
  • Licensing & applications: $8.6M
  • Net loss: $61.6M (up 46% YoY)

Pony.ai ended Q3 with $587.7M in cash and short-term investments, down from $747.7M in Q2, partly due to a one-time outflow supporting its joint venture with Toyota to produce its Gen-7 autonomous vehicle platform.

Despite rising costs, investor sentiment remained positive: Pony.ai’s shares jumped more than 6% on Nasdaq following the earnings release. Analysts view the company’s scaled deployments - both in China and abroad - as a key signal of growing confidence in autonomous driving as commercial robotaxi adoption accelerates.
