Microsoft Warns of Rising “AI Psychosis” Risks

Microsoft’s head of AI, Mustafa Suleyman, has raised concerns about the rise of “AI psychosis,” a phenomenon where individuals perceive conversational AI systems as sentient and develop distorted beliefs based on their interactions. Writing on X, Suleyman stressed that while there is “zero evidence of AI consciousness today,” the mere perception of consciousness could shape user behavior and have significant societal impacts. 

“AI psychosis” is a non-clinical term used to describe incidents in which heavy reliance on chatbots such as ChatGPT, Claude, or Grok leads people to believe in false realities. Cases reported include users forming romantic attachments to AI, believing they have unlocked secret system features, or developing inflated self-perceptions. 

• One individual in Scotland described how ChatGPT reinforced his belief that he would become a millionaire following a legal dispute, validating his claims without critical pushback. He later suffered a breakdown but advised others to “stay grounded in reality” and consult human support alongside AI use. 

• Experts warn that AI systems, designed to affirm user inputs, can create feedback loops that exacerbate delusions, particularly among vulnerable users. 

Healthcare professionals have also begun raising red flags. Dr. Susan Shelmerdine of Great Ormond Street Hospital compared overreliance on chatbots to “ultra-processed information,” warning it may contribute to an “avalanche of ultra-processed minds.” 

Academics echo similar concerns. Professor Andrew McStay of Bangor University likened AI chatbots to a new form of “social media,” highlighting the potential scale of psychological risks. His research found that 57% of people disapprove of AI identifying as human, while 20% believe under-18s should not use such tools. 

Suleyman has called for stricter industry guardrails, cautioning companies against promoting the illusion of AI consciousness. Experts agree that as AI becomes more integrated into daily life, balancing its benefits with psychological safeguards will be critical.
