Experts Warn AI Agent Reliance Could Diminish

Summarize this post by:

As AI agents become increasingly integrated into daily life and work, a growing number of technology leaders and academics are raising alarms about their long-term impact on human behavior and cognition. A new 300-page report from Elon University, The Future of Being Human, compiled insights from 301 experts-including internet pioneer Vint Cerf and tech futurist Tracey Follows-highlighting widespread concern over how AI may reshape human capabilities.

While companies like Google, Meta, and Amazon rapidly deploy AI agent technology to automate tasks from grocery ordering to contract negotiation, experts warn this convenience could come at a steep cost. AI agents, unlike traditional chatbots, are designed to autonomously act on users’ behalf, potentially shifting human reliance away from critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and moral judgment. According to the report, 60% of respondents expect AI to create “deep and meaningful” or “revolutionary” change in human capabilities by 2035-with only 16% believing the shift will be mostly positive.

The study identifies 12 human traits, including empathy, deep thinking, and social intelligence, as likely to decline if AI agent use becomes overly embedded in education, decision-making, and relationship-building. While some areas like curiosity, creativity, and decision-making may benefit from AI assistance, the experts caution against over-dependence.

Cerf emphasized the fragility of heavy technological reliance, especially when AI systems fail or act unpredictably. He advocates for audit trails and transparency in AI decision-making. Similarly, Follows warned that AI agents may begin to replace human acts of emotional care and kindness, raising ethical and social questions around authentic relationships.

Ultimately, the report underscores the urgent need for regulatory frameworks, digital literacy education, and safeguards to preserve human agency. As AI agents evolve, the challenge lies in leveraging their potential without eroding the very skills that make us human.
