New studies show that AI tools reduce creativity and diversity of thought. Experts warn of risks to critical thinking and original expression. As platforms like ChatGPT become widely used, researchers say these tools could lead to more uniform thinking and less individual expression. MIT researchers asked students to write essays using ChatGPT. Brain scans revealed lower activity in areas associated with creativity and memory. In contrast, students who relied on Google or their ideas were more mentally engaged.
Surprisingly, 80% of students using AI were unable to recall what the tool had written. Their essays also bore a resemblance to one another, repeating common themes such as success and charity. According to researchers, this suggests that AI may limit original thinking. Cornell University conducted a similar test using AI autocomplete tools. They found that content from users around the world still reflected Western preferences-such as pizza and Christmas-regardless of the author’s background. This demonstrates how AI systems can influence what users write, gradually favoring “normal” responses over time.
Santa Clara University explored the idea of generating ideas using both AI and creative prompts, such as Oblique Strategies. The result? AI-generated ideas were less original and more repetitive. As users continued interacting with the AI, they transitioned into what researchers referred to as a “curationist mode.” Instead of generating new ideas, they began editing AI suggestions.
These studies highlight a growing risk. While AI tools can accelerate content creation, they may do so at the expense of authenticity and critical thinking. Experts warn that over-reliance on AI could flatten creativity and suppress diverse perspectives. For professionals, students, and creatives, the key is balance. AI should support human work, not replace the thinking behind it.
