Artificial intelligence has rapidly moved from experimentation to daily use in the workplace, but its organizational impact remains uneven. According to Atlassian’s latest AI Collaboration Index, daily AI use has nearly doubled in the past year, with individual productivity rising as employees save an average of 1.4 hours per day. Perceptions of AI have also shifted, with the number of workers calling it “useless” dropping by 78%. 

Despite these improvements, only a small percentage of organizations report transformative benefits: 3% cite gains in efficiency, 2% improvements in quality, and 4% increases in innovation. While AI is clearly boosting individual output, team-level collaboration and enterprise-wide results are still lagging. 

How workers use saved time is also mixed. Nearly half (49%) dedicate extra hours to improving their work-life balance, while 43% reinvest time in strategy and 41% in process improvements. This indicates that AI may be helping reduce stress for individuals but not necessarily driving company-wide performance gains. 

Another pressing issue is the rise of shadow AI, where employees adopt unapproved tools without organizational oversight. One in three workers admit to using such tools, which not only heightens security risks but also deepens silos as teams rely on disparate AI platforms. 

Atlassian cautions that AI could inadvertently increase burnout. By automating repetitive tasks, AI shifts work toward more cognitively demanding activities, raising the risk of fatigue if companies do not restructure workdays and allow for adequate recovery.
