Enterprise AI is entering a decisive phase in 2026 as organizations move beyond pilots toward production systems with measurable business impact. The next 12 months will determine which enterprises successfully scale AI and which stall at experimentation.
Based on a survey of 800 executives across Europe and the Middle East, the research shows companies are shifting from fragmented AI adoption toward enterprise-wide strategies built on stronger foundations in data, infrastructure, skills, and governance. Lenovo’s European CMO Alberto Spinelli emphasized that AI is no longer a future ambition. But a defining force shaping how organizations operate and compete.
IDC Research Director Ewa Zborowska outlined five priorities CIOs must address to scale AI responsibly. First, AI must be positioned at the core of business strategy, with clear ownership, KPIs, and timelines aligned to enterprise goals. Second, organizations must identify proof of value by tying AI initiatives directly to outcomes. Such as revenue growth, customer experience, and productivity gains.
Third, scalable infrastructure is critical. The research found that 82% of organizations plan to run AI workloads in hybrid environments. This combines cloud, on-premises, and edge deployments, highlighting the need for secure, cost-efficient foundations. Fourth, CIOs must address rising interest in agentic AI, as 65% of organizations prepare for adoption. This includes managing autonomy, ensuring data quality, redesigning workflows, and preventing uncontrolled agent sprawl.
Finally, responsible AI governance remains a major gap. Only 30% of CIOs have established comprehensive AI governance frameworks, while more than half lack an organization-wide approach. IDC stresses that trust, transparency, and accountability are essential for scaling AI safely.
The findings suggest that enterprises that combine business alignment, infrastructure readiness, agentic control, and strong governance will be best positioned to turn AI investment into sustainable value in 2026 and beyond.
