AI is reshaping the future of work-reducing certain job opportunities while dramatically lowering the barriers to entrepreneurship. Layoffs and economic uncertainty continue across the tech sector. New research and expert insights show that artificial intelligence is enabling more individuals to start businesses faster, cheaper, and with fewer resources than ever before.
In the U.S., employers announced 153,074 job cuts in October, a 175% year-over-year increase, with many losses concentrated in tech roles. Analysts partly attribute this to AI-driven automation. Yet the same technology is opening new paths for displaced or risk-averse professionals interested in building independent ventures. With AI tools now able to handle tasks such as coding, content generation, design, customer support, and market research, early-stage development that once required teams of engineers can often be handled by a single founder.
Experts warn, however, that the hype around “vibe coding” paints an unrealistic picture. According to serial entrepreneur Zvonimir Sabljic, AI can help launch a product, but it cannot replace the ongoing business skills required to sustain and scale it. “People think once I have an idea and launch it, that’s it,” he told ZDNET. “When in reality, that’s when it starts.”
Key guidance from founders and investors includes:
- Set realistic goals - Start small and focus on creating a viable $100,000-a-year business before dreaming of unicorn status.
- Use AI to remove early barriers - For tasks that seem difficult, first ask: “Can AI solve this?”
- Seek professional support - Incubators such as Y Combinator, MassChallenge, and Capital Factory provide crucial guidance.
- Test quickly and refine - Launch demonstration projects to validate demand.
- Do the real work behind the scenes - AI cannot replace security, compliance, or product refinement.
In short, AI may eliminate some traditional tech jobs, but it is simultaneously democratizing entrepreneurship-empowering more people than ever to launch and grow their own businesses.
