AI agents are on track to radically reshape enterprise technology, according to Boomi CEO Steve Lucas, who predicts a future where traditional software applications disappear, and AI becomes the primary interface for work. Speaking at the Boomi World Tour in London, Lucas outlined three major shifts that will define the next phase of workplace automation.
Lucas said enterprises will soon operate like “self-driving organizations,” powered by billions, even trillions of AI agents that automate routine and specialized tasks. These agents will act as intelligent intermediaries between employees and core systems, improving workflows such as data quality checks, address validation, and information retrieval. Because agents can be created in seconds, Lucas argued that many existing software tool categories will eventually become unnecessary.
He also predicted that software applications will consume by AI, becoming logical constructs inside agent-driven systems rather than standalone tools. Instead of navigating CRM, HR, or finance platforms, employees will interact conversationally with AI, which will autonomously handle tasks such as approving expenses, analyzing customer records, or updating calendars.
In this agent-first future, system logins may disappear entirely. Enterprise platforms like Salesforce or SAP will remain essential systems of record but no longer require direct user interaction. Instead, AI will serve as the “experience layer” (verbal, visual, and auditory) that orchestrates work across platforms.
Lucas emphasized that this shift depends on solving integration and governance challenges. An AI activation layer, he said, will become the backbone of enterprise AI, connecting models, data, and workflows into measurable business outcomes. This approach directly addresses MIT research showing that 95% of companies deploying AI are not yet realizing revenue gains.
For leaders planning the next evolution of workplace technology, Lucas’s message is clear: AI won’t just enhance software; it will replace the way software is used.
