AI security vulnerabilities: why governance gaps are growing

AI security vulnerabilities are becoming a growing concern as enterprises accelerate adoption without strengthening their foundations. According to insights from Splunk, the rapid expansion of AI and machine data is reshaping cybersecurity into a high-speed arms race between attackers and defenders. While AI promises improved detection and automation, it is also exposing critical gaps in governance, data quality, and visibility.

The root issue lies in data. Many organisations assume AI can add value to existing systems, but poor data quality limits its effectiveness. AI environments amplify the principle of “garbage in, garbage out,” resulting in unreliable outputs and heightened risk exposure due to incomplete or unstructured data.

At the same time, AI is accelerating cyber threats. Around 95% of CISOs report increased attack sophistication following the rise of generative AI. Attackers now use AI to automate phishing, scale malware deployment, and execute multi-layered attacks at machine speed. This shift is effectively industrialising cybercrime, making attacks more convincing and harder to detect.

  • AI is enabling large-scale, automated cyberattacks.
  • Poor data quality increases vulnerability exposure.
  • Shadow AI usage creates hidden security risks.
  • Governance gaps reduce visibility and control.

Internal risks are also rising. Employees using unapproved AI tools can unintentionally expose sensitive data, with limited ability to retrieve or control it once shared. Without clear governance frameworks, organisations risk losing oversight over how their data is used and compromised.

To respond, enterprises must move beyond traditional security metrics and focus on resilience. This includes strengthening governance, improving data visibility, and maintaining a human-in-the-loop approach for critical decisions.

Ultimately, AI security vulnerabilities are not just a technical issue but a governance challenge. Organisations that balance innovation with control and automation with accountability are better positioned to defend themselves against evolving threats while safely scaling AI.
