Singapore Invests $1B to Lead Southeast Asia’s AI Growth

Singapore is rapidly consolidating its position as a regional leader in artificial intelligence (AI), supported by over SGD$1 billion in new government investments in compute infrastructure, talent development, and industry partnerships over the next five years. Since becoming one of the first countries to launch a national AI strategy in 2019, Singapore has achieved significant milestones. It includes the development of regional large-language models (SEA-LIONMERaLiON). And now it ranks first globally on the IMF’s AI Preparedness Index for digital infrastructure, innovation, and governance.

According to IDC research supported by Dell Technologies and Nvidia, one-third of Singapore’s government agencies have already deployed sovereign AI solutions, while two-thirds of private enterprises remain in the early adoption phase. Experts say scaling AI across industries will depend on three priorities:

  • Optimising AI infrastructure: Singapore hosts 60% of Asia-Pacific’s data centres. Efforts like the Sustainable Tropical Data Centre Testbed aim to improve energy efficiency and support AI workloads through public-private collaboration.
  • Driving adoption and governance: Only 14% of local firms have scaled AI company-wide. Expanding initiatives like GenAI Sandbox 2.0 and adopting intent-based AI regulation could bridge the gap between ambition and execution.
  • Developing world-class AI talent: The government plans to triple the national AI talent pool by 2030, complemented by enterprise-led upskilling and partnerships between companies and universities.

Andy Sim, Vice President and Managing Director at Dell Technologies Singapore, emphasized that advancing AI governance and sustainable infrastructure is critical to maintaining competitiveness. Singapore moves into its next phase of AI maturity. Coordinated public-private efforts in infrastructure, innovation, and education will be essential. To translate its early AI leadership into long-term economic growth and regional influence.
