OpenAI Unveils ChatGPT SDK for In-App Integrations

OpenAI has announced a major expansion of ChatGPT’s capabilities, introducing a software development kit (SDK) that allows developers to build and integrate third-party applications directly within the chatbot. The move transforms ChatGPT into a more interactive, multi-app platform, positioning it closer to an all-in-one digital workspace rather than a standalone AI assistant. 

In a live demo, OpenAI showcased how users could seamlessly interact with external services through ChatGPT. For instance, a user asked Canva to design a poster for a dog-walking business and then used the same session to generate a matching pitch deck. In another example, Zillow was used to display interactive property listings that could be queried further within the chat interface. 

Starting today, apps available inside ChatGPT include Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Expedia, Figma, Spotify, and Zillow. Additional integrations—such as DoorDash, OpenTable, Target, and Uber—will roll out in the coming weeks. This builds on OpenAI’s recent experiments with in-chat commerce, such as enabling Etsy purchases through ChatGPT. 

Key highlights for developers and enterprises include: 

• SDK launch: Developers can now access the preview SDK to build apps that interact directly with ChatGPT. 

• App directory & monetization: OpenAI will launch an app directory later this year and share monetization details soon. 

• Expanding ecosystem: The initiative reflects OpenAI’s ambition to make ChatGPT a universal interface for both productivity and commerce. 

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman noted that the update aligns with the company’s broader mission to integrate ChatGPT with the wider web and empower developers to build within its ecosystem. As the SDK matures, ChatGPT could evolve into a central AI-powered hub connecting users to a growing network of digital tools and services.
