Meta to Use AI Chatbot Chats for Personalized Ads

Meta has announced that starting December 16, user interactions with its AI chatbot will be incorporated into the company’s advertising and content recommendation systems. The change means conversations across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and the Meta AI app will feed into the same data ecosystem that already drives Meta’s $46.5 billion quarterly ad business.

Currently, Meta targets ads based on posts, clicks, and social connections. By integrating chatbot data, the company gains direct insights into users’ real-time interests. For example, if someone discusses hiking gear or travel plans with Meta AI, they could serve relevant ads and content shortly afterward. Meta says this move reflects user expectations for more relevant experiences, though it raises new questions about privacy and sensitive conversations.

The company emphasized that it will not use chatbot interactions to target ads based on protected categories such as religion, sexual orientation, politics, health, or ethnicity. Users will still be able to adjust ad preferences and content controls across platforms.

Key developments include:

  • Launch date: AI-powered ad targeting begins December 16, with user notifications rolling out next week.
  • Privacy guardrails: Conversations tied to sensitive attributes will not be used for ad targeting.
  • Market context: Meta AI already has 1 billion monthly users; rival OpenAI recently added shopping capabilities to ChatGPT.
  • Business scale: Meta’s advertising revenue rose 21% year-over-year last quarter, with a current market cap of $1.8 trillion.

While the update enhances personalization, it also increases scrutiny. Critics warn that conversations about relationships, finances, or personal struggles could inadvertently influence content recommendations. Past issues with Meta AI — such as users mistakenly publishing private chats — underscore the potential risks.

As AI-powered engagement becomes central to online shopping and content discovery. Meta’s move signals a shift in how social platforms monetize conversational data.
