Is AI an impediment or a catalyst for sustainability?
IArtificial Intelligence (AI) is emerging as both a challenge and opportunity in sustainability. One training run for a single large model can generate over 626,000 lb of CO₂ equivalent. This stark figure highlights the urgent need to manage AI’s environmental footprint.
At the same time, responsible AI deployment is proving transformative across industries:
- Efficiency gains: AI-driven optimization in electricity, water, and waste management enhances resource efficiency in buildings, cities, and factories.
- Smart governance: Finance and legal teams are using AI to streamline carbon accounting and sustainability compliance. Circular-economy efforts leverage AI, IoT, and blockchain for end-of-life product tracking.
- Infrastructure in practice: Enterprises such as NCS, Digital Realty, and Dell are integrating AI with IoT and liquid cooling to reduce data-centre energy use and carbon emissions.
Notably, SAP has increased AI‑driven efficiency in its green-energy data centres and offers solutions to help clients identify emissions, validate sustainability data, and support low-energy large language models (LLMs) . Meanwhile, Confluent’s real‑time data‑streaming reduces AI compute loads by filtering data before model use.
Despite this progress, experts caution that sustainable AI remains a work in progress. The sector must embed sustainability into AI strategies, invest in clean energy, and establish robust governance to ensure technology aligns with climate objectives. Leaders advise a multi-pronged approach—combining efficient infrastructure, leaner AI models, transparent carbon tracking, and regulatory alignment—to ensure AI serves as a catalyst rather than impediment to sustainability.
In summary, while AI’s energy appetite presents genuine environmental risks, the disciplined, data-driven integration of AI technologies offers powerful tools for resource efficiency and decarbonization—provided sustainability is prioritized at every stage.
