Google: 90% of Tech Workers Use AI at Work
A new Google study reveals that artificial intelligence has become nearly ubiquitous in the technology sector, with 90% of tech professionals now using AI at work. The figure, based on 5,000 global responses collected by Google’s DORA research division, represents a 14% increase over last year and underscores how quickly AI has become embedded into software development workflows.
Google and its rivals—including Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic—are racing to capture this adoption trend with AI-assisted coding tools. Startups such as Replit and Anysphere are also drawing investor attention as valuations rise alongside enterprise demand. Google’s Gemini Code Assist, which supports code generation and debugging, is now used by the “vast majority” of its own engineering teams, according to Ryan J. Salva, who oversees the tools.
Still, enthusiasm for AI is tempered by mixed perceptions of its reliability. In the survey:
- 46% of tech professionals said they “somewhat” trust AI-generated code.
- 23% said they trust it “a little,” while only 20% trust it “a lot.”
- When measuring impact, 31% reported AI slightly improved code quality, while 30% said it had no impact.
Salva described AI’s maturity in software development as being between “stage three and four” on a five-point scale—advanced enough to troubleshoot across systems but still requiring human oversight and safety checks.
The rise of AI coding comes as entry-level tech jobs shrink. Data from the New York Fed shows unemployment for recent computer science graduates now surpasses that of liberal arts fields, while Indeed reports software engineering job postings fell 71% between February 2022 and August 2025.
Despite these challenges, many experts argue that AI will streamline repetitive tasks while leaving higher-level design and decision-making firmly in human hands—a balance that continues to shape the future of software development.
