AI in HR: Preparing CHROs for the Human–AI Workforce
Artificial intelligence is redefining the human resources (HR) landscape, transforming how organizations recruit, develop, and manage talent. According to Gartner’s 2026 CHRO Top Priorities report, HR leaders must evolve from pilot programs to fully integrated, AI-infused operating models that blend human and machine capabilities. The rise of agentic AI — AI systems capable of perceiving, deciding, and acting independently — is reshaping both HR strategy and workforce design.
As of early 2025, 61% of HR leaders are already deploying or planning to deploy generative AI (GenAI), up from just 19% in mid-2023. Yet, adoption alone is not enough. Gartner warns that HR leaders must redesign roles, service delivery, and governance frameworks to realize AI’s full value. This includes establishing AI Centers of Excellence (COEs), identifying high-value use cases, and preparing employees for role augmentation.
Key recommendations for CHROs include:
- Crafting an HR-specific AI strategy aligned with enterprise goals.
- Upskilling the workforce with AI literacy and prompt engineering skills.
- Redesigning HR roles — such as creating positions for AI product leaders, digital HR operations leads, and GenAI experts.
- Launching AI COEs to accelerate innovation, governance, and ethical AI adoption.
While 62% of CEOs believe AI will define the next business era, only 21% of CIOs are prioritizing strategies to mitigate workforce disruption. Gartner predicts that AI’s net impact on global jobs will remain neutral through 2026. But by 2036, it will generate over 500 million new roles as human–AI collaboration becomes standard.
CHROs who act now can lead this transformation, ensuring their HR functions evolve into agile, AI-augmented ecosystems that enhance both business performance and employee experience.
