AI CEO Issues Stark Warning on Potential for Mass Unemployment

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has issued one of the most candid warnings yet about the disruptive potential of artificial intelligence, predicting that AI could cause U.S unemployment to surge to 20% within the next five years. Speaking with CNN and Axios, Amodei emphasized that AI is rapidly surpassing human capabilities in nearly all intellectual tasks, posing a significant threat to entry-level white-collar jobs. He believes up to half of these roles could be eliminated as companies increasingly automate tasks previously done by humans. 

Amodei’s perspective carries weight, as his company is at the forefront of developing advanced AI models. Last week, Anthropic released a new system capable of operating autonomously for nearly seven hours, underscoring how quickly AI capabilities are evolving. He noted that currently, around 60% of users leverage AI to augment their work, but a growing 40% are using it to fully automate roles. 

His comments reflect a growing concern in the tech and business community. A World Economic Forum report earlier this year found that 41% of employers plan to downsize due to AI by 2030. Notably, industry leaders such as Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella have publicly shared that AI already writes a significant share of their companies’ code. 

Amodei has called on lawmakers to consider taxing AI companies to redistribute wealth generated by automation and mitigate societal harm. He acknowledges AI’s potential to positively transform sectors like healthcare but insists that proactive policy and workforce adaptation are essential. 

While some experts argue AI may automate tasks rather than entire jobs, most agree that governments and businesses must prepare now. Amodei’s remarks blend ethical foresight and strategic positioning, signaling that responsible AI deployment must go hand in hand with economic resilience planning.
